Ginebra, GlobalPort cross paths anew
Six weeks after their controversial quarterfinals face-off in the last Philippine Cup, Barangay Ginebra and Globalport clash again in the elimination round of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday.
The Gin Kings and the Batang Pier slug it out in the 5:15 p.m. mainer of a Valentine’s Day twinbill, both out to bounce back from an opening-game loss in the mid-season tourney.
Ginebra went down to a 112-114 overtime loss to NLEX while Globalport suffered a 98-111 defeat at the hands of Mahindra.
Costly fouls by the Gin Kings helped the Road Warriors send the game into OT and eventually win the well-fought match.
Meanwhile, Terrence Romeo exploded for a career-high-tying 41 points but didn’t get the needed support from his teammates as the Batang Pier absorbed a first ever loss at the hands of the Enforcers.
Rain or Shine and Barangay Ginebra are the only teams left Mahindra has yet to beat since joining the league in 2014.
Last Dec. 27, the Batang Pier broke new ground, gaining a first-ever Final Four passage in nipping the Gin Kings, 84-83, in a knockout duel in Phase II of the Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
The Batang Pier tag along import Brian Williams while the Kings will be with Othyus Jeffers in their Valentine’s Day rematch.
Doubtful starters are Greg Slaughter for Ginebra and Jay Washington for Globalport. (SB)
