Unlike most replacement imports who still need time to get their conditioning back, TNT’s David Simon is more than ready to go.
Simon, who replaced Ivan Johnson, arrived in Manila on Monday just a day after wrapping up his stint in the Korean Basketball League.
“I should be in pretty good game shape. We just finished yesterday (Sunday) so I’ve been playing for the last six, seven months,” Simon said after his first practice with TNT on Monday night at Moro Lorenzo Sports Center.
Simon acknowledged the added pressure filling the shoes of Johnson, who led TNT to a championship last season.
“They won the championship last year and he was part of the team. So obviously you wanna come in and try to do the best and that’s what Im going to try to do,” he said.
The 33-year-old Simon, who is making his debut against the Alaska Aces Wednesday night, said he had known about the PBA before through TNT forward Kelly Williams, who was also his college teammate.
“A lot of good players, a lot of good athletes. It’s my first time being in the PH and really learning the basketball out here so it’s definitely good to get here and kinda start learning the guys on the team,” he said.
“I’m still learning. I see one of my teammates Kelly back in our college days. He was actually telling me about it some years back working out. So he was telling me a lot about the PBA.”
TNT would need every contribution it can get from Simon after starting the season at 1-2 with the temperamental Jonson barely seeing action.
The Tropa won their Commissioner’s Cup opener without Johnson, who was suspended after a punching incident before the conference even started. TNT went on to lose its last two games against Meralco and GlobalPort.
Johnson got ejected late in the second quarter against the Bolts and was subsequently suspended for the season by the PBA.
Simon is confident he can provide TNT what it has been missing.
“I’m a good team player. I play within the team. I try hard, always play hard and do what the coaches ask me to do,” he said.
“They mentioned to me, help in rebounding, just be a low post presence. I guess obviously, Ivan didn’t play so much this season. They didn’t really have a post guy as they were saying so it’s just what I’m here to do.”
