JayR Reyes, Ronjay Buenafe and KG Canaleta are three PBA players named to head the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team playing in international invitational tourneys in Dubai and Hong Kong in January.
Coach Chot Reyes has named 11 players to the team, reserving an open spot for PBA free agent Japeth Aguilar.
Meralco’s Reyes and Buenafe and Air21’s Canaleta agreed to give up their Christmas vacation to serve the national team. They’re teaming up with naturalized player Marcus Douthit and Smart Gilas cadet players Matt Ganuelas, Garvo Lanete, Greg Slaughter, RR Garcia, Kevin Alas, Ronald Pascual, Jake Pascual and Justin Melton.
Possible additions are Aguilar and Fil-Am player Isaac Holstein.
The PBA allowed Reyes to invite players from the six eliminated teams in the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup. Jones Cup heroes Gary David and LA Tenorio, however, are injured, Fil-Am guard Sol Mercado is ineligible while Petron Blaze players opted to concentrate on their preparation for the next PBA tourney.
Ateneo’s Kiefer Ravena is part of the cadet pool but, due to his classes, has not been tapped for the Dubai and HK meets.
Another Ateneo player, Nico Salva, and San Sebastian College stalwart Ian Sangalang begged off to be part of the pool as they already intend to join the next PBA Rookie Draft.
Reyes is back for another tour of duty with Smart Gilas following earlier stints with the team in the last Jones Cup and FIBA Asia Cup.
Canaleta has also found himself back in the PHL team after wearing the national colors in the 2007 SEABA Championship under the same coach.
Buenafe dons the national jersey for the first time, assuming the role played by David, Jeff Chan and Larry Fonacier in the Jones and FIBA Asia Cups.
The Dubai Invitationals is a tough tourney regularly participated in by the national teams of Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and UAE. (SB)
