In contrasting fashion, Pampanga and Iloilo barged into the championship of the 2016 Cloudfone-Batang PBA National Finals after getting past semifinal opponents Friday at the Philippine Science High School gym in Quezon City.
Pampanga dodged the bullet against Laguna, 86-79, while Iloilo pulverized Davao, 104-83. The Pampangos and Ilongos clash for the title at 10:30 this morning at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong even as Laguna and Davao dispute third place at 9.
Last June 1, Pampanga turned back Iloilo, 112-108, after trailing, 87-75, at three-quarters end, with Justine Dale Bondoc unloading 27 points, Miguel Pangilinan 26, Gabriel Baluyot 20 and Mark Adrian Mallari 19 points.
This time, Pangilinan poured 24 points for Pampanga, Mallari added 21 and Daniel Troy Paule 13 points. The Pampangos lost a 44-36 halftime lead and trailed 65-64 going to the fourth quarter before regaining control.
Marc Defante paced Laguna with 23 points, Angelo Alanguilan had 19 and Ashley Trinidad and John Ashley Los Banez 10 points apiece.
The other semis was decided early as the Ilongos stormed to a 27-15 advantage in the first quarter and were up 78-56 after three periods. Ralph Bajon uncorked 32 points, Ryan Calama-an 29, Giann Paul Nahine 18 and Marvin Cuerbo 10 points.
Aljay Alloso paced Davao with 21 points, Vince Petdeo Cuajao chipped in 20 and Emeliano Escalera 11 points.
