The Barangay Ginebra-Meralco title series was a phenomenal success on ticket sales as well as on TV ratings and on livestream viewing.

It drew an overflow crowd in each of the six games the Gin Kings took to dispose of the Meralco Bolts and bag their first PBA crown in eight years.

And it was as phenomenal in terms of TV and livestream viewing as what Sports5 and its digital arm D5 Studio reported.

Game Six of the PBA Governors Cup finale when the Gins Kings delivered the coup de grace saw concurrent livestream viewers on Sports5.ph soar by 2,000 percent.

Meanwhile, the classic finals series enjoyed a tremendous 45-percent audience share on TV viewing at its peak.

“Halos kalahati ng mga nanood sa TV noon, naka-tune in sa PBA,” said TV5 president/chief executive officer Chot Reyes.

“We’ve always had a good rating in any PBA finals. But the good rating soared to phenomenal in this series,” Reyes also said.

The TV5 top boss and concurrent Gilas Pilipinas head coach called it “a perfect storm.”

“It’s not only the Barangay Ginebra mystique. It’s the fact that they’d not been there for years. Talagang nauhaw at nagutom ang tao,” Reyes said. “I don’t think it would be that huge if not for Ginebra and if Ginebra is there every year. The fact was that eight years sila nawala at biglang pumasok uli sa finals.”

From 9:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. in Games Four to Six, TV5 beat all other networks on ratings and audience share.

“It’s not just Ginebra. It’s also because every game was classic, each game bakbakan. Credit should also be on Meralco. They fought a good series, and the two teams engaged in a well-fought series,” said Reyes.

“Madaming factors na nagsama-sama. The result was the kind of rating that we got on TV and on online digital. The numbers were Gilas proportions. What a success it was!” Reyes added.
