Abueva returns in style but admits he’s still not 100%
After sitting out the first two games of the season, Calvin Abueva announced his return in style as he led Alaska to its first victory in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday night.
Abueva played as if he never left, notching a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds in a comeback victory over GlobalPort.
“It was my first game back and we really needed to win,” said the undersized forward in Filipino. “Fortunately for us, my teammates and I showed great efforts in the fourth quarter.”
None had a bigger impact in the payoff period than Abueva, who fired 15 points in that quarter alone.
Known for his ability to attack the paint on the offensive end, Abueva showed his outside game making 3-of-4 shots from the 3-point area.
“Actually, I didn’t expect that my shots will fall, but I guess I got a little lucky. My confidence also went up as soon as my shots started to go in.”
Despite his strong showing, Abueva said he’s still not 100 percent.
“I’m okay but there are still times that it still hurts,” he said. “But I need to play to contribute offensively and defensively.”
