San Mig Coffee Planet drew a collective gasp when Marc Pingris went down midway through the third quarter of Game 4 of their title series against Rain or Shine.

Video replay showed that JR Quinahan inadvertedly poked Pingris in the eye in a rebound play, sending the Gilas mainstay writhing in pain along the San Mig baseline.
He was immediately subbed and never returned to the game, which saw the Coffee Mixers grab a 3-1 edge over the E-Painters in the best-of-seven Finals with a 93-90 win.

Pingris immediately left the Big Dome after the game, but San Mig team doctor Raffy Sanchez doused any speculations on the condition of their power forward.

FEATURED STORIES

“It’s just an abrasion over the right cornea,” Sanchez said, saying that they, together with ophthalmologist Dr. Charice Sanchez, looked at Pingris’ eye and deemed that a visit to the hospital would no longer be needed.

“He was just given anesthetics and antibiotics which were dropped into the eye. In 24 hours, he’ll be okay. He’ll feel better tomorrow,” he said.

Asked if there’s a chance Pingris will miss Sunday’s potential title-clincher, Sanchez assured San Mig fans the Pinoy Sakuragi will be suiting up.

“There’s a big chance he’ll be able to play on Sunday. If not by tomorrow, we’re planning to put contact lens on his eye just to expedite the healing process,” he said. “He can practice tomorrow if he feels okay. It’s nothing serious, really. It’s just an abrasion. It’s too annoying, it’s too painful, but in 24 hours, he’ll be fine.” (RL)
