A LONG WAY TO GO
When GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio accepted the position to man the sidelines for the Batang Pier, he only had one mission – to fix the team.
But after dropping his debut game against Air21, 78-83, on Wednesday, Jarencio admitted that there is still a lot to do in his checklist.
“Medyo marami pang aayusin sa team. Pero pag naayos na yan, tutuloy-tuloy na yan,” he said.
“Yung mga players na inaasahan natin, di nakapag-deliver ngayon. Siguro naga-adjust pa rin sila,” Jarencio said. “During practices at nung off-season, ok naman yung takbo ng team eh, pero nung nagka-TV, nag-iba eh. Siguro opening jitters.”
Jarencio, a 16-year PBA veteran who previously called the shots for the UST Growling Tigers in the collegiate ranks, said that there aren’t any goals set for them, and any progress would be a welcome sign for the Mikee Romero-owned franchise.
“Ang sa akin lang, basta’t yung effort andun at di sila nagkukulang, ok na ko dun. Kasi pag ganun yung team, for sure magkakaroon ng progress at darating din yung panahon na gaganda rin ang takbo,” he said. “For now, medyo masama lang yung takbo namin. Konting dasal at sipag pa for both the players and the coaches. Yung camaraderie andyan na eh, pero yung system, di pa nila naa-adapt ng husto.”
When asked about his thoughts on his first game as a PBA head coach, Jarencio gleefully replied, “Sanay naman tayo eh.”
“At the end of the day, ang naglalaro ay yung players. Sila ang magpapanalo sa yo. Ako, kung ano lang maituturo ko, ituturo ko,” he said. “For me, basta’t natalo ang team, alam kong may pagkukulang. Siguro ako na lang yung may pagkukulang kaya kami natalo.”
“Yung goal lang sa akin, one game at a time. After the eliminations, dun na kami mage-evaluate kung saan kami napunta. Pero every game naman, tinitignan namin kung ano yung kulang. Pero once na makuha yung sistema, magtutuloy-tuloy na yan.” (RL)
