WEBB JOINS CONE’S STAFF
Jason Webb, the 1997 PBA Draft third selection who went on to play in the pros for six seasons and now sitting on the panel covering PBA games, has just been lured out of the commentator’s booth to join the San Mig Super Coffee coaching staff starting the Governors’ Cup Final Four.
“The San Mig Super Coffee Mixers are excited to announce that TV5 commentator and ex-PBA player Jason Webb will be joining the coaching staff of Tim Cone as an assistant coach,” a text message from the San Mig Coffee head coach read.
“We feel with his insights into the game and work ethic, he will be a valuable contribution to the staff,” Cone added.
A former La Salle Archer and among the vital cogs of the Philippine team that won the gold medal in the 1985 Chiang Mai SEA Games, Webb is joining Cone’s staff crippled by the transfer of Jeff Cariaso and Olsen Racela to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
Judging by his work on the TV panel, Webb could really be a good addition to the San Mig Coffee mix.
Basketball is his life, having Olympian Freddie Webb as father and having played the game from his boyhood.
After a stellar stint as a La Salle Archer, Webb was a vital cog in Stag’s long, historic reign in the defunct PBL.
And as the Lucio Tan’s conglomerate returned to the PBA in 1999, Webb rejoined the ball club, coach Alfrancis Chua and teammates led by Eric Menk.
He was Sta. Lucia’s third pick in the 1997 PBA Draft behind Andy Seigle and Nic Belasco.
He played in the PBA from 1997-2001 and 2003, averaging 3.2 points and 2.4 assists in 274 games.
On top of his work as a TV5 commentator, Webb also serves as a member of the Paranaque City Board Council. (SB)
