So far, coach Alex Compton’s free-flowing system has netted good results for Alaska in the ongoing Philippine Cup, as the Aces remain the only unbeaten squad in the tourney.

But for starting guard JVee Casio, there are still a lot to be learned.

“Nakita natin na the system is working pero ang dami pa rin nating pwedeng magawa,” he said.

FEATURED STORIES

Take for example their game against San Miguel Beer on Wednesday, where the offense really was off.

Casio said, “I think yung offense namin is struggling, pero maganda yung defense namin. Medyo naninibago pa kami sa style, pero mahalaga sa amin, kahit sino ang mag-score ok lang.”

Alaska escaped with the 66-63 victory to top the standings at 4-0.

“This win is a character win for us because we played a tough team. Nag-grind out lang kami. But it’s too early to tell,” Casio said.

The pint-sized point guard also did not discredit their old system – the triangle – in some of the schemes that they are running in the games.

“We still have a little bit of the old one, pero may mga inputs lang. We’re trying to be disciplined on that,” he said. “We want some early opportunities, pero pag wala, set lang, being patient on offense.”

But again, Casio reiterated that the early victories is just the tip of the iceberg, and many things can still happen from here up to the playoffs.

“Yung wins namin, come from behind, grind out, but it’s still too early. Maaga pa to sa kung ano ang mararating ng team.” (RL)
