A six.

That’s coach Jeffrey Cariaso’s grade for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel after once again being booted out of contention in the quarterfinals, this time at the hand of Talk ‘N Text.

“We improved from the last conference, but it’s hard when you’re not fully understanding (the system), it’s hard to trust it, especially when it’s a knockout game. We veer away off from it, and that’s just forcing the nature,” he said. “I just got to impose our will a bit more, remind them that when we run the triangle, good things happen. It’s pretty much going back to the drawing board now.”

Cariaso convened with his staff moments after losing to the Tropang Texters and reassessed the conference that was for the Kings, and said, “You’re short in reaching your goal, so we’re reassessing ourselves and hopefully, we get something better next conference.”

The glaring point in that talk, Cariaso said, is what he felt about the team’s idea of the triangle as a whole.

“I think they’re not understanding it the way I understand it,” he said. “We always say time is a factor, also experience. With two conferences in, that’s not enough time.”

“Even my last year in the PBA, I was still making mistakes and still forgetting things, it’s never gonna be perfect. But at this point, not to give excuses, what we envision and what I want them to play is not there yet, so I have to look at what we’re doing and hopefully, I need them to get there a bit faster.”

Still, Cariaso remained optimistic on the future once Ginebra finally grasps the full potential of the system.

“This team is touching on something special. We’re just not getting there yet. How do we deal with it? Move on and learn from it. What else can you do,” he said.

“As disappointing as it is, as heartbreaking as it is, you just have to continue working harder, make them understand the philosophy you’re trying to impose, and hopefully, the results will be different.” (RL)
