ENOUGH OF THE POOR STARTS
You wonder what was running through Alaska coach Alex Compton’s mind after losing Game 4, 88-70, to San Miguel?
Just three words.
“We got beat,” he said. “Triple the exclamation point in that one. Kita naman natin kung bakit sila number one sa standings.”
Compton was left to rue the Aces’ shortcomings in this game after San Miguel flexed its muscle in clearing the glass, outrebounding Alaska, 53 to 35.
“More than our guys playing terrible, San Miguel played well,” he said. “The way they looked in the eyes, they beat us.”
“San Miguel Beer played well and they deserved to win. They deserved it clearly.”
Also not helping Compton’s cause was Alex Cabagnot’s best game in the Finals, with the shifty playmaker exploding for 22 points in the victory.
Compton said, “Cabagnot was outstanding in the first half. They were shooting the lights out.”
“I give credit to coach Leo (Austria) because he had a great game plan and a great preparation for this game,” the Alaska chief tactician added.
But more than raining praises on the opposition, Compton stressed that Alaska could no longer afford to trail big because of their poor starts.
“Hindi pwede mangyari yung tambak kami sa una,” he said. “As good as San Miguel Beer is, I got to do a better job to get us some shots. I keep on saying defense, defense, defense, but we got to find ways to get us some shots.” (RL)
