“It’s going to be a process, and it’s gonna take time.”

With all corners of this basketball-crazy country itching for news on the national team front, head coach Tab Baldwin begs everyone’s indulgence but added that the team will start to take form by the end of the 2015 Commissioner’s Cup.

The American based in New Zealand said that he will try his best to sharpen his eye for talent as he plans to be at most of the games in the second conference.

“I’ll go to as many games as I can and I hope we can put the coaching staff together. Then I’ll be expecting the coaching staff to help me with their input for the selection,” Baldwin said.

Right now, only Jimmy Alapag has been named as a deputy for Baldwin on the Gilas bench, and he hopes to complete the staff before the conference ends.

“I will sit down and try to be very logical, be measured in everything that I do. I want to make sure that the whole basketball community feels represented, but I also want people who could do their jobs,” he said.

Baldwin also added that he wants to get insights from the PBA coaches, saying, “I also got to know all of them. I value their opinions on players because they know the players much better than I do.”

With regards to the players he would pick, Baldwin aims to keep the mentality coach Chot Reyes had in the last incarnation of the Gilas five.

“I intend to pick the best team that I can,” he said. “At this point, I’m committed to use the dribble-drive offense, but it won’t constitute the entirety of our offense. But I do believe that it suits the style of Filipino players. I have to continue to grow and learn that offensive system myself. I’ve used it, I’ve been around it, and I have to work hard to understand it. But that, to some degree, will dictate what types of players we are looking at.” (RL)
