GIN-kia slaughter

Facing a 7-foot-3 behemoth like PJ Ramos was a totally different experience for Greg Slaughter.

Used to being the tallest guy on the floor, the Cebuano giant saw himself dwarfed by the Puerto Rican when Barangay Ginebra squared off against Kia Friday.

But Slaughter did hold his own against Ramos, tallying 14 points and eight rebounds in the Kings’ 100-92 win.

“It was cool. It’s always nice to get a challenge like that. It’s a good learning experience,” Slaughter said.

The sophomore Ginebra slotman admitted that it has been quite a long time since he took on taller guys, dating back to his Smart Gilas days when they played against 7-foot Serbians and Chinese. But the stock knowledge of facing those giants made the duel between Ramos and last season’s Rookie of the Year an easier one for Slaughter.

“It’s no problem. We just have to stick to the fundamentals. Being tall, I know what it’s like so I try to make it uncomfortable for someone bigger than me,” he said.

Slaughter is also glad that Ginebra is now getting used to the run-and-gun offense that the team has been known for before trying out the triangle under coach Jeffrey Cariaso.

He said, “Our first option is to get the fastbreak. We’re having the patience now, that if we don’t have that, we’ll work inside-out. Our advantage in this team is size, and now, we’re using that.” (RL)
