Lassiter credits teammates for clutch baskets in game 2

With San Miguel trying to keep up with Alaska in the final three minutes of the game, AZ Reid found an open Marcio Lassiter on the left corner, who then drilled the trey to slice the lead down to two, 95-93 with 2:20 left.

Fast-forward a minute after, Lassiter was once again at it, receiving the ball after Alex Cabagnot and Chris Lutz swiveled the leather from one side to the other. Open from the left corner anew, he knocked down another triples to push the Beermen ahead, 98-95, with a minute left to play.

That final six points from proved to be the deathknell for Alaska, as Lassiter and the rest of the crew steered San Miguel to a come-from-behind 103-95 victory for a 2-0 lead in the 2015 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.

But for Lassiter, those ballsy shots wouldn’t be possible if not for his teammates.

“I got to give credit to my teammates. If AZ didn’t pass it out from a double-team, if Alex didn’t pass it to Chris and he didn’t pass it to me, that shot’s not going up,” he said. “I got to give credit to my teammates because it’s them who made it possible for me to get these wide open shots. I just had to be ready and knock down the shots.”

One of the deadliest shooters in the game today, Lassiter has also developed a penchant for big game moments just like what happened on Sunday. This triggered coach Leo Austria to brand Lassiter as one of the bests in the league.

However, Lassiter defrays it all.

“Definitely, it’s a great praise, but I’m just working everyday, continuing to work on my craft,” he said. “I work hard to shoot threes, I want to expand my game, provide what the team needs, but I can’t do it without my teammates. They’re finding me at spots where I’m wide open. I’m not creating threes on my own, I know I can, but a lot of it comes from assists and they’re huge in finding me. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this team.”

And as the series goes to a Game 3, with San Miguel having a chance to go on the hill, Lassiter knows that the Beermen can’t get too ahead of themselves.

“We got to take it one game at a time and it will be a crucial game for us,” he said. “They want to get on the board and the odds will be heavy on our side if we win, but we’re just going to come in with the same mentality we had in Game 2 and we’re gonna make some adjustments because they did a good job with the bigs with Sonny (Thoss) and (Romeo) Travis.”
