Meralco’s ‘lack of defense’ leads to winless start
There’s no mystery behind the Meralco’s winless start in the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup.
No mystery but there’s a big reason to it.
“Defense,” said Bolts head coach Norman Black, summing up his team’s early struggles.
“It shows in the stats. We’re giving up too many points, teams are shooting such a high percentage against us. Our interior defense, our perimeter defense, it’s just lacking right now.”
The numbers don’t lie and in Meralco’s latest defeat against Barako Bull, the Bolts’ flaws were exposed.
The Energy nearly made half of their field goal attempts with a 49% shooting clip en route to keeping the Bolts winless in four outings with a 108-106 victory. And not even Gary David’s 40-point explosion could carry Meralco, which also shot itself in the foot with 19 turnovers.
Through four games, the Bolts are also the worst team in field goal percentage allowed, opponents’ assists and are second to the last in points allowed and opponent three-point percentage.
