Alaska Milk has gone 2-0 with import sub Shane Edwards and the Aces are now among the frontrunners in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The Aces raised the level of their game notches higher in their second game with Edwards in tow, blasting the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 128-102, in a Petron Blaze Saturday Special at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Edwards, Calvin Abueva and Vic Manuel scored at least 20 points each, leading a lethal game that had the team rising to 2-1 in the team standings in the mid-season tourney.
Abueva top scored with 25 points after delivering only 11 points in each of their first two games. Edwards came through with 23 markers, 11 boards, two assists and two steals against six turnovers.
Thoss, Chris Banchero and RJ Jazul contributed double-digit outputs as the Aces fashioned out the most lopsided game in the tourney, surpassing Star’s 19-point win over Blackwater (122-103) last Wednesday.
The E-Painters dropped to 1-3 with three straight losses, two with import replacement Antoine Wright.
Compounding their woes was the exit of Jeff Chan midway through the third period due to an ankle sprain.
Thoss banged in a rare three-pointer then Edwards attacked an open lane for an authoritative two-handed jam, sparking a run that opened a 19-point lead for Alaska at 93-74 late in the third.
Calvin Abueva and Edwards both came out firing, combining for 36 points as the Aces led 59-54 at the half.
The Aces came out strong from the starting block, enjoying couples of nine-point leads in the early goings before taking the opening quarter at 59-54.
Then the E-Painters also got into the groove with clutch baskets from afar by Maverick Ahanmisi and Chris Tiu enabling the team to race ahead at 38-31.
Regrouping, the Aces pounded the E-Painters inside the paint and thus regained the upper hand going into the final half.
Alaska enjoyed a 28-10 advantage on points at the paint in the first 24 minutes of play.
