Johnedel Cardel likely to coach GlobalPort, Pumaren as consultant
Johnedel Cardel oversees the GlobalPort Batang Pier training and is likely to call the shots for the team in the coming PBA Governors Cup, backed by Franz Pumaren as consultant.
GlobalPort top official Erick Arejola said they’re negotiating with Pumaren for the latter to come on board and be part of the think tank of the team with the season-ending PBA tourney to start in a month.
“Yes, we’re in negotiation process,” said Arejola in their talks with Pumaren, head coach of the Adamson Falcons in the UAAP.
While still in search of a permanent head coach to take over from Pido Jarencio, Cardel runs the Batang Pier practices as the interim coach. Pumaren, or any body, is not allowed to be head coach in both the collegiate basketball and in the pros.
Cardel, a former La Salle standout who saw action in the pros with Sta. Lucia, Alaska and Shell, took the rein in GlobalPort’s last game in the recent Commissioner’s Cup, steering the Batang Pier to a 125-118 win over the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
The Batang Pier will step up training upon the arrival of import Dominique Sutton in the last week of the month.
Sutton has had a previous stint in the local pro league, averaging 21.26 points, 15 rebounds and 3.4 assists in the 2014 Governors Cup with Air21, curiously under Pumaren.
The 6-foot-5 North Carolina native, who played college ball with Kansas State and North Carolina Central, led the Express to a decent 5-4 win-loss record in the elims before they bowed out to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (with twice-to-beat advantage) in the quarterfinals.
