Scottie Thompson, the teleserye fan
Scottie Thompson wakes up around 6 in the morning to get to Ginebra’s 10 a.m. practice in Pasig. Coming from Las Pinas, he usually doesn’t have enough time to have breakfast at home and that’s where drive-thrus come in handy.
Other than his morning routine, there are a lot more things that most don’t know about Thompson.
It’s a largely documented fact that Thompson is a triple-double machine in his college days for University of Perpetual Help and is now being groomed as Barangay Ginebra’s future.
While Thompson does spectacular things with the basketball, he’s as ordinary and simple as most fans when he’s off the court .
Although, he’s probably more into teleseryes than most of us.
“Mahilig ako sa teleserye kasi yung mommy ko pagdating ko sa bahay puro teleserye so nanonood na rin ako hanggang sa nahawa na ako. Nahiligan ko ng manood ng Dolce Amore. Paborito ko yun ngayon,” said Thompson, who blushes while watching Liza Soberano, one of the lead roles of his favorite drama.
Rarely does the pressure of a big game affect Thompson, but his heart pounds when Soberano is on. He would only star in a TV show if Soberano is his leading lady and he cleared that his girlfriend, who is also the reason why he wears the No. 6 to commemorate their anniversary, doesn’t mind every time he gushes over her celebrity crush.
“Oo basta partner ko si Liza. Sobrang crush ko siya kasi unang-una ang galing niya bilang artist. Lalo na sa Dolce Amore. Di ko alam yung feeling, talagang tumitibok. Minsan kami ng girlfriend ko sabay kaming nanonood and sabay din kaming kinikilig.”
Thompson will be playing in his third conference next month, and could possibly be getting the starting point job, and he admits he still gets overwhelmed seeing the Ginebra crowd during the game.
Getting picked fifth overall by Ginebra in the draft fulfilled his dreams. He wanted to be a PBA player and he wanted to play for Tim Cone.
“Isa sa mga pangarap ko na natupad makapaglaro sa pba at makapaglaro for coach tim tapos Ginebra pa.”
“Una nakaka-startstruck makita mga kakampi mo at makakalaban mo. Iba pala talaga ang Ginebra. Napakasarap maglaro sa Ginebra. Nakaka-overwhelm yung crowd. Naglalaro kami para sa crowd hindi para sa sarili namin.”
“Kahit tambak kami, sumisigaw pa rin sila. Ginaganahan kami.”
Thompson, 22, has a bright future ahead of him but he knows basketball careers — no matter how great you are — don’t last forever.
That’s why he’s ventured into different businesses. He’s about to open his own barber shop and is planning to get into the UV Express business from Las Piñas to Ayala and back.
“Tinatayo pa lang barber shop ko. Matagal ko ng plano ‘to. Marami rin kasing may gusto at marami akong kakilala.”
His name sounds foreign and that’s because his great grandfather was a member of the US Army who was assigned in Manila.
Thompson says he’s a mama’s boy and that the thing people don’t know about him is that he’s religious.
When technically, it’s not that.
It’s this: “Ang tunay na lalaki kinikilig sa Dolce Amore.”
