Rookie Wright keen on helping Phoenix win

Phoenix rookie Matthew Wright has been consistently delivering the goods for the Fuel Masters in the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup.
In fact, the St. Bonaventure University standout is averaging 17.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per outing, good enough to keep him in second place behind Blackwater’s Mac Belo in the Rookie of the Year race.
But for the Fil-Canadian hotshot, winning the coveted award doesn’t cross his mind. He said he would rather see the team advance to the quarterfinals.
“I don’t care about the award. I just care about winning games and trying to make it to the playoffs,” Wright stressed.
“I know that all my individual success will be based on how our team does (this conference). And that’s the most important thing,” he said.
“It’s just a bonus. It’s a nice trophy to have, but you know if I get it, it’s nice. If I don’t, that doesn’t really matter to me.” he added.
The Fuel Masters have been showing signs of cohesiveness as the tournament progresses and Wright hopes the team accomplishes its ultimate goal of winning the coveted crown.
“My main goal is to win a championship and you know, we feel that we have a chance, though, a lot of people have counted us out. I believe we have a lot of guys out there who are brave just like I am.” Wright said. Onofre John Andres
