Perseverance and hard work pays off for Maiquez
Three years ago Dexter Maiquez thought his PBA dream was finished. But the Rain or Shine rookie persevered and is now enjoying the fruits of playing in Asia’s first play for pay league.
“Medyo gumanda na ang buhay kahit papaano. Tapos yung gusto pa nating laro ang pinagkakakitaan kaya masaya,” offered the 25-year-old Maiquez, who now owns a brand new car and have acquired a house and lot in Pampanga.
But Maiquez was quick to add that he had to go through tough times to earn the luxury he and his family now enjoy.
He was undrafted in the 2014 PBA Draft Maiquez didn’t lose hope until Lady Luck smiled on him.
Coach Caloy Garcia recruited him to add depth to a Racal team that is making a return in the 2016 PBA Developmental League. The former San Sebastian bruiser didn’t disappoint, helping the team reach the semifinals in both the Aspirant’s and Foundation Cup tournaments.
His hardwork finally paid off when Garcia, who took over from now NLEX coach Yeng Guiao, included him the E-Painters’ roster this season after spending the previous year with ROS as a practice player.
“Syempre nakaka-overwhelm kasi mga dating idol mo biglang nakasama mo na,” the ex-Stag said adding that he is improving on his game with the help of his veteran teammates.
“Si Beau (Belga), sila Jeff (Chan), Sila iyong nagbibigay sa’kin ng advice. Kailangan natin pakinggan kasi mga beterano ‘yan.”
Maiquez said the most important lesson he learned from his experienced teammates is how to adapt to numerous game situations. Jeremiah Sevilla
