Businessman/sportsman Mikee Romero and coach Junel Baculi have renewed their old winning ties with the GlobalPort Batang Pier ballclub.

GlobalPort announced Thursday Baculi is coming on board to be the team’s new head coach, taking over from Glenn Capacio, who slides down from interim bench chieftain to assistant.

The Batang Pier will hold their first practice session under Baculi at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center Friday.

FEATURED STORIES

Romero and Baculi had had a winning partnership, producing gold medals for the country in the 2006 SEABA Champions Cup and the 2007 SEA Games.

The opportunity to forge another tieup came along after Barako Bull dismissed Baculi towards the end of the Philippine Cup elimination round. The Energy Cola tapped as interim coach Bong Ramos who is reportedly set to be replaced by Pido Jarencio.

GlobalPort official Erick Arejola said they hope to improve the makeup of the team before the Commissioner’s Cup begins Feb. 8.

The Batang Pier finished dead last with a lone win in 14 games in their maiden conference in the pro league.

“We want some improvement in both our frontcourt and backcourt,” said Arejola.

Being considered as import is Justin Williams, a 6-foot-10 center/forward who had stints with the Sacramento Kings and the Houston Rockets in the NBA. (SB)
