Two-time MVP winner James Yap and 2012 MVP awardee Mark Caguioa headline a bevy of past and present cage stars performing in the highly anticipated 2013 PBA All-Star Week in Digos, Davao del Sur in May.
Yap and Caguioa lead the PBA All-Star Selection that will be pitted against Gilas Pilipinas in the All-Star Game on May 5.
The San Mig Coffee top gun and the Ginebra main man were voted to the PBA All-Star starting five together with top rookies Calvin Abueva of Alaska Milk and Chris Ellis of Barangay Ginebra and Petron Blaze do-it-all forward Arwind Santos.
Coming off the bench, as chosen by the PBA coaches, are Air21’s KG Canaleta, Petron’s Alex Cabagnot, Jay Washington and Marcio Lassiter, Alaska’s Cyrus Baguio and JV Casio and Rain or Shine’s Beau Belga.
Yap is seeing action in his 10th All-Star Game, becoming the third 10-time All-Star participant after Dindo Pumaren and Vergel Meneses.
In Laoag last year, the San Mig Coffee star established a new All-Star high of 44 points to lead the Veterans to a 176-144 win over the RSJ (Rookies/Sophomores/Juniors) squad. And he subsequently won the All-Star Game MVP award.
Caguioa, meanwhile, makes a return stint in the mid-season spectacle after missing the Laoag festivities due to an injury. He’s making his sixth All-Star appearance.
Santos and Baguio are also set to become six-time All-Star participants, playing under coach Luigi Trillo in his All-Star debut.
Yap and company challenge the Chot Reyes-mentored national team that is gearing up for the coming FIBA Asia Championship.
Naturalized player Marcus Douthit banners Gilas Pilipinas that also features Talk n Text mainstays Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jayson Castro, Jarred Dillinger, Larry Fonacier and Ryan Reyes, Rain or Shine’s Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood, Ginebra’s LA Tenorio, Petron’s Junmar Fajardo, San Mig Coffee’s Marc Pingris, Globalport’s Gary David and Japeth Aguilar, Alaska’s Sonny Thoss and cadet player Greg Slaughter.
Like Yap, Jimmy Alapag is to play his 10th All-Star Game.
The 2013 PBA All-Star Week is once again showcasing a Legends Game, featuring retired stars Kenneth Duremdes, Benjie Paras, Bong Hawkins, Jerry Codinera, Vince Hizon, Noli Locsin, Rodney Santos, Art dela Cruz, Glenn Capacio, Dickie Bachmann, Topex Robinson and Johnedel Cardel.
Duremdes, Paras, Capacio, Bachmann, Dela Cruz and Robinson team up with Ronjay Buenafe, Ronald Tubid, Chris Tiu, JC Intal, Sol Mercado and Jervy Cruz in Team Stalwarts against Team Greats’ Hawkins, Codinera, Hizon, Locsin, Cardel, Santos, Dondon Hontiveros, Mark Cardona, Mike Cortez, Josh Urbiztondo, PJ Simon and Joe Devance.
The team of Ato Agustin, Alvin Patrimonio, Olsen Racela and Jojo Lastimosa prevailed over the squad of Johnny Abarrientos, Allan Caidic, Leo Isaac and Duremdes last year. (SB)
