Junmar Fajardo is on a mighty roll, giving Petron Blaze a joy ride.
The 6-foot-10 rookie behemoth delivered another huge double-double performance and the Boosters held off the badly-undermanned but fighting Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 90-88, to move in the threshold of the PBA Governors Cup Finals Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.
With a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five semifinals series, the Boosters go for the clincher in Game Three on Saturday in the same venue. They set out for the game on a hot 11-game streak.
“Our chance to play in the finals has increased, but there’s still the chance that they would come back,” said Petron coach Gie Abanilla. “Complacency is our enemy. But if we do things right, I think we’ll be okay.”
“Wala kaming ipapangako except na patuloy namin subukan galingan maglaro,” said Fajardo, the season’s top draft pick making a late push for the Rookie of the Year award.
After a remarkable game Monday, Fajardo returned to put in an even brighter performance.
He made a career-high 26 points on top of 14 rebounds after getting a career-best 17 boards that went with 15 markers in the series opener.
“He stepped up and he imposed himself down low,” said Abanilla of their prized rookie.
Nonetheless, the Boosters had to play tough to the finish to overcome the gutsy stand of the crippled Rain or Shine side.
The Elasto Painters were in the game until the final second despite Paul Lee, Ryan Arana and JR Quinahan helpless on the sideline and the team’s terrible 0-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc.
They eventually lost the game only after Arizona Reid missed a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer.
“Another cliffhanger. But we knew they would give us a good fight. Good thing, Junmar stepped up and three other guys made double-digit output,” said Abanilla.
Fajardo stood out, wreaking havoc at the paint as the Boosters opened a 10-point lead, 70-60, in the third quarter.
He was amazing in their third-quarter run he highlighted with three powerful jams, two on putbacks.
The E-Painters fought back from seven points down in the last three minutes, and got a chance to send the game into overtime after Petron import Elijah Millsap split his foul shots with 4.2 seconds to go.
The Boosters, however, clogged the defensive lane, and Reid missed a tough drive at the buzzer.
Reid carried much of the load for the E-Painters, exploding for a game-high 39 points. (SB)
