Whenever Alaska needs a big shot, expect no less than JVee Casio to be ready.
And right on cue, the pint-sized assassin hits his signature three, thrusting the dagger right into the hearts of Alaska’s opponents.
And on Sunday, it was no different as the former Green Archer hit back-to-back threes in the last 1:21 which gave the Aces a 13-point lead over Barako Bull, 88-75.
Though the Energy would mount a comeback, their efforts fell short as Alaska scored a hard-fought 90-87 victory.
Casio had 15 of his 20 points in the second half, powered by 4-of-7 shooting from three-point region, to go with his five assists.
“Yung team, nalaman na kung pano maglaro, and it doesn’t matter who scores as long as Alaska scores,” he said. “Yung potential ng team, nandun. Marami pa kaming pwedeng magawa.”
Casio also said that the team’s identity is still the same despite the coaching transition from Luigi Trillo to Alex Compton, saying, “We’re still doing kung ano yung ginagawa namin with coach Luigi and wala namang big change na ginawa. Ini-instill lang ni coach Alex yung system nya paunti-unti.”
With the 51-point Rain or Shine beatdown already a thing of the past, the Aces have racked up three straight wins and are looking deadly going into the quarterfinals.
But Casio doesn’t want to get this hot shooting night to be a cause for overconfidence.
“Hindi na namin masyadong iniisip kung san kami babagsak kasi more often, going to the playoffs, yung rhythm, yung winning mentality, yun yung hinahanap mo,” he said. “These kinds of games really gives us confidence, but it’s still going to be tough whoever we will be facing. Di pa namin alam kung sino ang kalaban namin. There’s gonna be a lot of game plans pa.”
But when asked what changed the tide for the Aces? Casio believes its not their offense, but rather, their defense which is translating into wins at the tailend of the eliminations.
“Our defense, everyone’s getting into that, believing in that, sacrificing for each other, trying to do our very best in defense,” he said.
And a big reason for that, Casio said, is their import Henry Walker.
“Siya yung anchor namin sa defense. He grabs the rebounds and helps on defense. He knows when he needs to score,” he said. “Our offense will be there, pero ang ini-instill ni coach Alex is our defense.” (RL)
