Gilas Pilipinas rested Andray Blatche and Paul Lee, and coach Mike Fratello and his Ukraine team hardly relaxed feasting on the Filipinos in a 114-64 rout at the close of the 2014 Antibes Basketball Tournament at the Azur Arena in Antibes, France Sunday (early Monday morning in Manila).
“We needed that,” said Gilas coach Chot Reyes on his Twitter account after the match, keeping a positive outlook as they return to Spain for the stretch run of their buildup for the 2014 FIBA World Cup set Aug. 30-Sept. 14.
Reyes was positive with the fact that, at least, they got valuable lessons in their losses to France, Australia and Ukraine in the Antibes pocket tourney.
They play four more tune-up games in Spain before plunging into action in the world meet versus Croatia on Aug. 30 in Seville.
After a fighting performance against France and a decent first-half stand against Australia, the Nationals took a big step backward, beaten black and blue by Ukraine while sitting out Blatche and Lee.
Reyes rested Blatche and Lee so as not to aggravate their minor injuries.
Minus their top center and ace combo guard, the Nationals simply had no answer to Ukraine’s relentless game, suffering much pain ahead of the Spain meet.
Gilas Pilipinas was in the game only in the opening quarter, torn to shreds in the second period on a 40-19 onslaught by the tall and hefty Ukraine side.
Behind a scorching 25-of-38 field shooting, including a 9-of-13 clip from beyond the arc, the Ukrainians, to play in Group C in the world joust, sat on a 61-35 cushion at halftime.
And hardly slowing down, Ukraine led by as many as 51, 114-63, before wrapping up the win that came after a 63-56 decision over France the previous night. (SB)
