GLOBALPORT APPOINTS TICZON INTERIM BENCH CHIEFTAIN
In a few days time, Richie Ticzon became an assistant coach then head coach in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Failing to strike a deal with his top choices, Globalport team owner Mikee Romero announced Saturday the appointment of Ticzon as interim head coach of the Batang Pier in PBA Season 39 that fires off Nov. 17.
Romero made the announcement before the Batang Pier played the Alaska Milk Aces in a preseason match at the Gatorade Hoops Center. The Batang Pier handed Ticzon a 102-92 win over the Aces in the tune-up.
Romero’s top choices for the job were Talk n Text assistant coach Nash Racela and Alaska Milk deputy Alex Compton.
But Racela declined Globalport’s offer while Compton failed to get the Alaska management’s nod to terminate their contract. Compton signed a two-year contract extension with the Aces shortly after they won the Commissioner’s Cup.
Ticzon’s original appointment at Globalport was merely as the first assistant coach.
Coming on board with Ticzon were Mac Cuan and Eric Gonzales.
As Ticzon moved up as interim head coach, Gonzales was promoted to being the first assistant.
A former Ateneo Eagle playing alongside Olsen Racela and Vince Hizon in the collegiate leagues, Ticzon graduated to the PBA as Purefoods draftee. He later also played for Shell and Alaska in a seven-year PBA career where he averaged 5.1 points in a total of 257 games.
After a thorough meeting Friday night, the management decided to let coach Junel Baculi focus on his responsibilities as athletic director of National University. (SB)
