Mac Cardona was on fire in the fourth period as he towed NLEX to an 84-81 victory over reigning Grand Slam titlist San Mig Coffee Saturday in the 2014 PBA Holcim Liga ng Bayan Preseason Games at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
Cardona was stellar in the game, scoring 14 of his game-high 22 points in the payoff period while adding seven rebounds, and three assists in the numerous times he silenced the pro-San Mig Biñan crowd in the payoff period.
Aldrech Ramos had 15 markers, while Enrico Villanueva and Mark Borboran each added 12 points.
“Maganda yung pinakita namin today. Honestly, yung game shape wala pa. Nangangapa pa yung iba. Pero si Mac Cardona, I hope magtuloy-tuloy na yung game nya,” said NLEX assistant coach Adonis Tierra.
NLEX led by as much as 10, 45-35, just before the halftime break, but San Mig slowly chipped down the lead and got to as close as one. The Coffee Mixers, who just arrived from their preseason stint in Korea the night before, were never really able to get over the hump, however.
With the Road Warriors precariously holding to an 84-81 lead in the final minute, Wynne Arboleda got stripped by Mark Barroca with 22 seconds left to play, but San Mig could not capitalize, as Mark Barroca’s potential game-tying three missed the rim.
Ian Sangalang led San Mig with 16 points and seven boards, while Barroca ended up with 14, as the Coffee Mixers lost its sixth straight tuneup game, including their games in Korea.
