Turning 40, the Philippine Basketball Association holds a grand season of nostalgia, celebration and thanksgiving, looking back to its glorious past and at the same time looking forward to a rosier and more vibrant future.
With the solid foundation laid down by the PBA forefathers, current league officials are optimistic the PBA will forever be well entrenched delivering the best sports entertainment to the Filipino people.
“Anchored on the spirit of doing the right things, on integrity, sportsmanship and public interest, I’m very confident the PBA will continue to improve and hopefully break barriers,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud during the media launch of PBA Season 40 at the EDSA Shangri-La in Mandaluyong City Tuesday.
The league chieftain admitted the PBA is an institution far from perfect, but “that is what makes it even more exciting.”
The PBA is a strong, thriving people’s league – thanks to the collective efforts by its founding fathers sustained by the pioneering and the next generations of PBA leaders.
“It teaches us the lesson that destiny, fate and future are very much in the hands of people for so long as we are committed to doing the right thing,” Salud stressed.
“Faced with risk and uncertainty when it was founded in 1975, the PBA in its 40 years has become a source of inspiration and pride to many of us who’ve seen it grow right before our very eyes,” Salud also said.
The PBA celebrates the milestone with a season that the league commission encapsulated into a moment of “paghanga at pagpugay, pasasalamat at responsibilidad.”
Part of the speech Salud delivered in the media launch said: “Paghanga at pagpugay sa founding fathers of the PBA, sa pioneering generation who followed after them, sa lahat ng mga heroes sung and unsung na dahil sa kanilang pagpupursigi brought us here today.
“When the PBA started, di naman lingid sa atin that our country was at the height of Martial Law. One can imagine the thousand and one reasons that the PBA’s founding fathers could cite in not daring to dream of putting up the PBA; in throwing in the towel when the going got tough; and in not putting in place values and principles as the bedrock of the PBA when survival must have been the order of the day. It boggles my mind, it humbles me, it inspires me.
“Pasasalamat na we are celebrating our 40th anniversary from a point of strength rather than weakness, and surviving for 40 years in the face of non-stop challenges and stiff competition. Pasasalamat that our pioneering generation had the wisdom, the prescience to lay down the immutable values and principles of integrity, of sportsmanship and fair play and that public and fan interest is paramount – values and principles that the PBA can turn to time and again as the simple secret to longevity and success.
“Responsibilidad – to be clear, not a heavy sense of responsibility, but an exciting and energizing sense of responsibility to our founding fathers, to all those who helped bring us to where we are today – from players, to referees, to coliseum barkers, to ball boys, to the police who help us secure venues, to media, team owners, managers, coaches, trainers, to our fans and our public – to responsibility and proudly carry the torch that has been handed to us, and to pass this torch burning even brighter to the next generation of PBA leaders and supporters.”
Salud is optimistic the 40th PBA season will delight the fans no end. (SB)
