ABUEVA LEADING ACES TO FINAL 4 ALREADY AN ACHIEVEMENT – Seigle
Danny Seigle, the last rookie to win the Best Player of the Conference award, recalled the time he won his first individual plum in the PBA.
“That was a long time ago,” Seigle recalled. “But I was blessed at that time that I was involved in a team committed to win and has teammates who think of one common goal and that is to win championships.”
Seigle was hands down choice as BPC winner in the 1999 Governors’ Cup, a tournament which his team, San Miguel Beer, won. In between that year until 2001, the Beermen won five championships and the pride of Wagner University became part of that dynasty.
This conference, a rookie named Calvin Abueva of Alaska has put himself in strong contention to win the BPC. The prized newcomer of the Aces have become the game changer. He is currently running second in the statistical race behind Arwind Santos, whose Petron Blaze team got eliminated by San Mig Coffee.
Seigle said he saw the impact of Abueva’s game, leading his team to the semifinal round.
“I think that itself is already an achievement,” said Seigle. “For me, the best player of the conference should be given to an individual who helped his team reach a higher level.”
“Ultimately, I have to favor the guy who gets his team deep into the playoffs. Winning should be every player’s objective. The individual award is an added bonus, but should be credited by team effort, in my opinion,” he added. (RJ)
