After a fifth Finals over nine conferences just a few days back, Rain or Shine starts another quest as it plays its first game in the PBA Governors’ Cup versus San Miguel Beer Tuesday at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Naturally, the Elasto Painters want to remain a championship contender after that foiled shot at the Commissioner’s Cup crown against eventual champion Talk n Text Tropang Texters.
In giving away Arizona Reid, the E-Painters took in a solid replacement in Wendell McKines, a player with a previous tour of duty in the PBA with Alaska in the same conference two years ago.
With just a 10-day break, the Texters returned to action with aplomb Sunday, beating out the Barangay Ginebra Kings, 95-91, in a duel of injury-hit teams.
The E-Painters look to follow the example of the Texters as they play the Beermen at 7 p.m.
It could well be an emotional rematch between San Miguel and Rain or Shine after their Commissioner’s Cup tussle marred by a near fracas in the last two minutes of the game.
ROS coach Yeng Guiao was thrown out of the game after a second technical incurred for nudging SMB import Arizona Reid shortly after the latter inbounded the ball in front of the E-Painters’ bench. Reid drew the ire of his former team for disrespectful words uttered ahead of their impending win.
“I should have been more respectful,” Reid said later, aware he won’t be able to join San Miguel without the clearance from Rain or Shine.
Reid and his Beermen should come out with a sense of urgency following back-to-back losses to the Kia Carnival and to the Meralco Bolts. Reid was slowed down by a stomach infection in their previous games.
Regular import Hamady N’Diyae, Taiwanese reinforcement Jet Chang and new trade recruit Alex Nuyles put in big help, combining for 53 points as Kia once again stunned San Miguel Beer, 83-78, Wednesday.
N’Diyae top scored with 21 points and also got six rebounds and four blocks while Nuyles and Chang added 18 and 14 points, respectively, as the Carnival repeated their 88-78 upset of the Beermen in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Curiously, San Miguel, the reigning Philippine Cup champ, was the first team beaten by the league newcomer twice.
If that wasn’t enough, the Beermen dropped their next game versus the Meralco team already minus two key players out on fouls in overtime.
SMB coach Leo Austria was mum after the game. Team captain Arwind Santos, meanwhile, said they don’t know anymore what’s bugging them. (SB)
