Sluggish through three games, San Miguel eyes to hit the reset button and rekindle its old fire when it plays Mahindra on Sunday in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After a scary 93-88 win over an undermanned Alaska squad last Saturday, and the defending champions are raring to show that they can still be the dominant San Miguel team of old.
“We had nothing to gain and everything to lose in that game,” said coach Leo Austria. “This is a good lesson for us.”
The outspoken mentor also didn’t deny his team feeling a bit overconfident. “We’re too complacent. We’re always tagged as the team to beat pero maraming teams na naglalakasan. We have to prove na kami pa rin yung defending champion.”
Team captain Arwind Santos agrees, as he also noted that he still hasn’t seen the dangerous team that has netted the franchise the past two Philippine Cup titles.
“Kailangang ipakita namin na ganoon nga. Alam namin na kami ang pinaghahandaan nila, kaya kami din dapat paghandaan ang mga kalaban namin,” he said.
This duel against Mahindra could serve as just the right starting point, with the Floodbuster yet to win a game this season.
Tip off is at 4:30 p.m.
Coach Chris Gavina has had a hard time stringing up wins this conference but is banking on Alex Mallari, rookies Russel Escoto and Joseph Eriobu to lead the team over the hump.
But it’s still too early to tell, knowing that in their past two outings, Mahindra has always had the number of San Miguel. And if there’s any game ripe for an upset, it may definitely be this one.
