GlobalPort marked its return under the tutelage of coach Pido Jarencio with a dominant 92-73 win over Meralco in the opener of the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Tuesday night.
Seven-foot reinforcement Patrick O’Bryant and Asian import Omar Krayem put in what were expected from them, helping GlobalPort to a winning conference debut for the first time in the franchise’s young history.
O’Bryant and Krayem played well with Terrence Romeo and the rest of the GlobalPort locals, negating Andre Emmett’s explosive 41-point debut with the Bolts.
“Our objective was to stop him (Emmett). Yung 41 points na ‘yon mababa na ‘yon because he’s scoring more than that in their tuneup matches,” said Jarencio.
“We denied him and we pressured him pero talagang magaling at talagang scorer. Mas malaki ang sakit ng ulo namin kung pati yung locals nila nag-contribute,” Jarencio added.
Emmett scored more than half of their output on 9-of-21 field goals and 21-of-29 charities, but not a single Meralco local put in more than seven markers.
The Batang Pier played a lot more balanced game as they dominated the team that they had not beaten in four previous matches.
“I have to give credit to our coaching staff. They gave me full support. It’s a good win considering this is our very first game without tune-up matches because of injuries and since kadadating lang ng imports namin,” said Jarencio.
“I’m comfortable (in my comeback as GlobalPort head coach). Yun dalawang (Billy Mamaril and Doug Kramer) bagong dating sa amin, malaki ang maitutulong. They will give us stability in the middle, their experience and their winning record,” Jarencio also said.
Mamaril and Kramer played quality minutes in their GlobalPort debut, especially making their presence felt on defense.
The imports, the new GlobalPort recruits and the old stalwarts worked well together as the team took control almost throughout the contest.
Even with Stanley Pringle just sitting on the bench.
